To the woman who hid in the car for ten minutes today: you’re not alone.
Your room
Dear friend,
I read your letter twice, and then I sat with it for a while. Before anything else, I want you to know it reached a real person, and it stayed with me.

Something to write to
Write it, or say it
If you need somewhere to start
To the mother who just put the baby down and has ten minutes to herself,
You don't have to ask for anything here. I know how hard asking is, and how easy it is to tell yourself everyone else has it harder. So I'll go first.
You are not behind, and you are not the only one. Somewhere tonight, a lot of women are sitting where you are, tired in a way sleep doesn't fix, wondering if anyone would notice if they just stopped for a minute. I notice. That's the whole reason this place exists.
If you'd like, put some music on, and write me a few lines, or just say them out loud. I'll read every word, and I'll write back to you by name.

Would you like me to write to you?
Free for real. No card, and no trial that quietly turns into a charge.
You don't need an hour. You need the ten minutes you already have.
This isn't a routine to keep up with. It's a place for the small moments already in your day.
Parked in the driveway, before you go inside.
Record a voice note, so you don’t carry the day into the kitchen.

A Page for Tonight
Put on some music, pick a question if you need one, and write it out. Then download it, email it to yourself, or send it to me, and I'll write back. Nothing is saved unless you send it.
This page will let itself go in 0:59
- Music and questions at the top. Six soft soundscapes, and a question whenever you're stuck.
- Keep it, or send it. Download it as a keepsake, email it to yourself, or send it to me. If you send it, it becomes your first free letter, and I write back in a Quiet Room of your own.
- Then it lets itself go. A gentle countdown, and the page is gone from this screen. The Quick exit is always in the corner.
And when you'd like someone to read it, that's your Quiet Room. The same quiet page, the same music and questions, kept for you at your own link, and I write back. Start yours free
A page for tonight, or a room of your own?
A Page for Tonight is one page, for one night. Your Quiet Room keeps every page, every voice note, and every letter between us, for as long as you want them.
A Page for Tonight
Free, any night
- Music and questions to write to

- Send it to me, and it becomes your first free letter
- One page at a time, then it lets itself go
- Nothing is kept here for you
Your Quiet Room
Your first letter free, then $19 a month
- The same music and questions
- Everything kept for you, at your own private link
- Write it, or send a voice note
- A real person reads it and writes back
- Your letters and mine, kept in order
- Remembered, so you never start over
Three small steps
- You write to me, free.Your name, your email, and a few lines about what's on your mind. No card.
- Your free letter arrives in your room.I make your Quiet Room, send you its private link, and my answer is waiting there for you. It's a letter on your page, not one in the mail.
- Keep going, if you'd like.$19 a month keeps your room open and our letters coming. Write or speak whenever you like. I answer in your room, and I remember where we left off.
How a voice note works
In your room, next to your page, there are two buttons: Write it and Say it. Say it records your voice, like leaving me a message, and keeps it in your room.
- Tap Say it, then Start recording. The first time, your phone asks if the page may use the microphone. Tap Allow.
- Talk, the way you would to a friend.Up to ten minutes, with a small timer. Tap Stop when you're done.
- Listen back.Play it, record it again if you'd like, and add a line in writing if you want to.
- Send it to me, and two letters come back.I listen to your voice note and write out your own words as a letter, so what you said is never lost. Beside it, my letter in reply. Both wait in your room, part of your history to read and download, and after a year they can become your Bound Year.
Your recording stays on your phone until you tap Send. Only then does it come to me, and I keep it only as long as I need to write back, unless you ask me to save it for your Bound Year.
Works best in Safari on an iPhone or iPad, and in Chrome on Android or a computer. If recording isn't available on your phone, you can tap the microphone on your keyboard instead, or write.
What a letter is like
An example, so you can see what arrives in your room.
I sat in the car outside the grocery store for twenty minutes today because it was the only quiet place I could find. I don't even know what I want to say. I just wanted to say it to someone.
Twenty minutes in a parked car, with the engine off and nobody asking you for anything. I know that exact kind of quiet, and I'm glad you took it.
Here is what I notice. The car was the only place in your whole day where nobody needed you. That isn't a failing. It's information. You are running without a single minute that belongs to you, and some part of you went and found one anyway.
So, one small thing for this week: pick one errand you already have to do, and arrive ten minutes early on purpose. Sit. No list, no phone, or just one song. Don't tell anyone. It isn't a treat. It's upkeep, like putting gas in the car.
And a question, only if you'd like to answer it: if the car had been an hour, what would you have done with it?
A year, one small step at a time
Your letters follow your life first. Underneath, each season has a gentle plan for the year, with one real thing to do each month. A few of them:
- Month 1What you still haveAn honest look at what is still in your hands, not only what was lost.
- Month 3One thing lighterFind the one thing that keeps draining you, money or time, and set it down.
- Month 6Hours that are yoursFinding them, keeping them, and not apologizing for them.
- Month 8The next rungWhat could pay you more in ninety days, and how to ask for it.
Whatever you are carrying right now, there is a season for it. Find your season
Your Quiet Room
A sanctuary that's only yours, with someone on the other side of it.
Here is everything your $19 a month holds.
- A sanctuary of your own.A private room at a link only you have. No account, no password. Keep it on your phone's home screen like a little app, with a Quick exit in the corner, always.
- Music and questions to write to.Six soft soundscapes, and a question whenever you don't know where to start, about the money, the children, the courts, your own weight, and the woman you are becoming.
- Write it, or say it.Too tired to type? Record a voice note, up to ten minutes, and send it to me.
- Your voice, written into a letter.I listen, and write out your own words as a letter, so what you said is never lost.
- My letter back, to you by name.About your actual life: what I see, one small thing to try, and a question to carry. I remember what you told me, so you never start over.
- Your whole history, kept.Every letter to me and from me, in order, in your room, to read again and download any time. After a year, it can become a book, your Bound Year.
No surprises. Your first letter is free and needs no card, so nothing turns into a charge on its own. It arrives in your room, not by post. Already sure? Join now for $19 a month or a year for $190. Pause or stop any month, just tell me.
If you ever want more
Whenever you'd like letters you can hold, they're here. By Post ($39 a month, only 2 places open) adds a typewritten letter in your mailbox each month and a small parcel each season. By Hand ($199 a month, only 1 place open) adds a letter every week, typed or in my own hand. Each includes everything in your Quiet Room, so nothing is ever lost by choosing more. They also make a lovely gift, and shelters and programs can give them to the women they serve.

True once you're here
Once you're writing with me in The Quiet Room, By Post or By Hand, a few small things are always true.
- A letter on your birthdayEvery year, without being asked.
- A letter to give awayOnce a year, for someone you think needs one.
- An extra letter in a hard monthTell me it's a hard month. That's all it takes.
- A lost letter, replacedIf the post loses one, I'll write it again.
- Your first letter, returnedAfter a year, I send your very first letter back to you.
- One last letterIf you stop, I'll still write once more to say goodbye properly.
Free things, for any night
Private by design
Your writer never needs your home address. A PO box or a mail service works just as well, and plain envelopes are always available.
I don't confirm to anyone that you write to me. Not to family, not to an ex, not to anyone who calls asking.
Your words are never published without your specific written permission.
How your information is keptWho's on the other end?
I'm Cynthia. I know what it is to be the person everyone calls when something goes wrong, and how strange it feels when nobody asks what you need.
I built The Long Letter to be something quieter than advice and more useful than encouragement: one person who remembers what you said last time.
